Monday night a blockbuster trade was made that sent New England Patriots backup QB Jimmy Garoppolo to the San Francisco 49ers.
Finally some good news for Niners Nation. ESPN’s Adam Schefter announced on Twitter that San Francisco and New England made a trade that would send Jimmy Garoppolo to the 49ers in exchange for a 2018 second-round pick.
The 49ers are 0-8 on the season and one of only two teams without a W on the year. San Francisco elected to focus on defense in the 2017 draft and it shows. As the Niners’ defense improves week to week, their offense continues to go nowhere.
The 49ers selected Beathard in the third round of the 2017 draft and in two and a half games he’s thrown just one touchdown to two interceptions.
The 25-year-old QB was set to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, and instead of letting him walk the Patriots got something in return for him.

Last season New England started Garoppolo while Tom Brady was serving his four-game suspension for deflategate. In two games Garoppolo was 42-for-59 on passes, threw four TDs and had zero interceptions along with two wins.
The Patriots didn’t miss a beat with Garoppolo under center and in just two games (before being injured) he showed the rest of the league his value. Once Brady’s suspension was over Garoppolo returned to the sidelines as a backup.
That makes this mid-season trade a win-win-win.
San Francisco got much-needed help at the quarterback position and potentially a guy they can build the team around, while Garoppolo gets out of Brady’s shadow and the Pats keep getting richer stacking up picks.
Because the 49ers offensive line is so poor, chances are San Francisco won’t throw Garoppolo to the wolves right away and risk him getting hurt. Most of their evaluations of the young QB will be in practice, says ESPN NFL reporter Jeff Darlington.
That Niners have faith Garoppolo is their guy moving forward and because of that the team has decided to release Hoyer.
