Lakers rookie Kyle Kuzma impresses in preseason opener

Los Angeles Lakers rookie Kyle Kuzma continues to impress on the court making him look more and more like the steal of the 2017 NBA Draft.

I know what doubters are thinking–it’s just one preseason game. Well before that those same doubters were saying it’s just the Summer League. But no matter how you slice it, the Lakers got a steal in Kyle Kuzma with the No. 27 pick of the draft.

Kuzma became a sensation in Summer League showing out and displaying the potential to be a great NBA player. His skills and accuracy from three makes everyone wonder how the heck this kid slid to No. 27.

The answer–he wasn’t much of a shooter in his college career and went under the radar in the draft.

So the fact that Kuzma is playing for the purple and gold means L.A.’s scouting staff deserves a ton of credit. Kuzma impressed them at the NBA combine and he’s proving they made the right choice to take a chance on him.

In the Lakers’ preseason opener against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Kuzma had a team-high 19 points on 9-of-12 shooting. He played 26 minutes–the second-most–and was a +4 for L.A.

But it’s not just that the rook got 19 points in an exhibition game or that he won the Finals MVP in Summer League, it’s that no matter the stage he rises against the competition and plays with a confidence level unseen in rookies coming into the league.

As the No.27 pick, Kuzma has already surpassed expectations. At the rate he’s going he’s definitely about to take some playing time away from Lakers starting power forward Julius Randle.

Believe the hype because it’s real. Kyle Kuzma doesn’t have the potential to be the steal of the draft, he is the steal of the draft.
