Lakers’ Lonzo Ball, Kyle Kuzma establish winning chemistry

The Los Angeles Lakers’ top two draft picks Lonzo Ball and Kyle Kuzma are having a heck of a Summer League creating winning chemistry that will translate to the regular season.

With Brandon Ingram out of the Lakers’ lineup for Summer League, it looked like it was going to be the Lonzo Ball show for L.A. Although Lonzo is living up to the hype, Kyle Kuzma is also making a name for himself and leading the way for the Lakers.

In L.A.’s Summer League debut Kuzma had a quiet game of nine points, three assists, and four rebounds but since Ingram went down he’s stepped up and put his full skill set on display. In the Lakers’ second game against the Boston Celtics Kuzma had 31 points on 12-for-26 shooting, shot 50% from three and had nine rebounds .

L.A. dropped their first two games but have since won four straight now finding themselves in the semifinals, and Kuzma and Lonzo have had a big hand in that. After having a less than impressive debut for the Lakers, Lonzo bounced back with a modest triple-double of 11 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists against the Celtics. He backed up that performance with a breakout game against the Philadelphia 76ers dropping 36 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds.

In L.A’s  win over the Cleveland Cavaliers Lonzo posted his second triple-double of Summer League with a stat line of 16 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds. In the same game his go-to teammate Kuzma dropped 20 points on 50% shooting from the field and from three.

In the Lakers’ quarterfinal victory over the Brooklyn Nets Kuzma remained impressive putting up 26 points on 52.6% shooting while Lonzo got a near triple-double of 14 points, nine rebounds and 7 assists. But the best part about Lonzo and Kuzma’s play is not just their ability to score and pass but the chemistry and familiarity they’ve built.

They’ve established a great rhythm with one another and have both emerged as L.A.’s go-to guys this summer. Kuzma and Ball also put on a show fit for the Hollywood lights through an electrifying one-two tandem with Ball as quarterback and Kuzma as the receiver. Together they’ve created an extensive highlight reel where Kuzma is the benefactor of Lonzo’s precise dimes.

Ball and Kuzma are still only a rookies and have their work cut out for them to have the same impact on a regular season game, but if their Summer League play carries over, the Lakers have a star duo on their hands.
